Continuing Education

COVID-19 Updates on Continuing Education (per the NYS Education Department Office of the Professions):

“Some regulations restrict licensees to a certain percentage of self-study for continuing education requirements. In response to the evolving situation with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), and for those licensees whose registrations are due to renew March 1, 2020 – July 1, 2022, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees to complete up to 100% of the continuing education as self-study, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession.

Additionally, the Department will grant an adjustment to all licensees, regardless of registration renewal date, to utilize self-study for any coursework taken during the period from March 1, 2020 – July 1, 2022, provided that it is taken from a Department-approved provider and is in an acceptable subject area for the specific profession. Coursework taken outside that timeframe must meet the continuing education requirements in each individual profession’s laws and regulations.

NYSED is working closely with other New York State agencies and the Governor’s Office to tackle issues relating to COVID-19. Please continue to monitor the Department’s website for updated guidance.”

General Information on Continuing Education:

To be acceptable for New York State continuing education, the courses or educational activities you take must meet all three of these basic criteria:

  1. They must be administered by an approved NYS sponsor (provider), and

  2. They must be in an acceptable subject area, and

  3. They must be given in an approved format (either a course or educational activity)

Additionally, the courses or educational activities must contribute to the professional practice of landscape architecture; as such practice is defined in the NYS Education Law, Section 7321.

You should always verify prior to signing up for a course or education activity and when you arrive to take a course, that the course or education activity does indeed provide the needed NYS CE credit.

Providers already approved within the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) meet one of the criteria noted above, as AIA/CES is an entity authorized to approve providers. However, courses or educational activities taken through the AIA/CES provider program must also be in an acceptable subject area and given in an approved format in order to be acceptable to the NYS Education Department.

The C2Ed program administered by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB), SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Cornell University's Department of Landscape Architecture, and CCNY's Program in Landscape Architecture are approved providers of continuing education in New York State.

Always check with the provider to be sure that the course will meet SED requirements for CE credit for Landscape Architects.

NOTE: Regarding courses offered by manufacturers and representative of other products, there are now strict guidelines as to the course content and the degree to which 'sales' activity is part of the course presentation. Some of these providers are aware of the new guidelines, some are not.Courses are intended to be non-proprietary in nature. Courses that serve as a "marketing pitch" for a manufacturer will not be approved for NYS CE credit. For example, a manufacturer's Power Point presentation may only include their company name/logo on the first and last slide of a presentation.
