Latest update as of December 12th, 2025
The New York State Council of Landscape Architects (NYSCLA) is pleased to share the news that A.7561 Lupardo/S.7220 Webb was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul on November 21st, 2025.
This legislation updates existing laws regulating CEU requirements for licensed registered professional landscape architects in New York State. The updates provided in this legislation are consistent with updates made by other licensed design professions, such as architecture and engineering, in recent years.
The law now enters an 18-month implementation period. NYSCLA will provide further updates to the New York ASLA chapters as more information is received from the State Education Department and the State Board of Landscape Architecture.
During this 18-month implementation period, continue getting your CEU’s as usual following NYSED guidelines posted on their website. Check back here where we will be posting updates on the 18-month implementation as we receive them.
General Information on Continuing Education courses:
To be acceptable for New York State continuing education, the courses or educational activities you take must meet all three of these basic criteria:
They must be administered by an approved NYS sponsor (provider), and
They must be in an acceptable subject area, and
They must be given in an approved format (either a course or educational activity)
Additionally, the courses or educational activities must contribute to the professional practice of landscape architecture; as such practice is defined in the NYS Education Law, Section 7321.
You should always verify prior to signing up for a course or education activity and when you arrive to take a course, that the course or education activity does indeed provide the needed NYS CE credit.
Providers already approved within the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) meet one of the criteria noted above, as AIA/CES is an entity authorized to approve providers. However, courses or educational activities taken through the AIA/CES provider program must also be in an acceptable subject area and given in an approved format in order to be acceptable to the NYS Education Department.
The C2Ed program administered by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB), SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Cornell University's Department of Landscape Architecture, and CCNY's Program in Landscape Architecture are approved providers of continuing education in New York State.
Always check with the provider to be sure that the course will meet SED requirements for CE credit for Landscape Architects.
NOTE: Regarding courses offered by manufacturers and representative of other products, there are now strict guidelines as to the course content and the degree to which 'sales' activity is part of the course presentation. Some of these providers are aware of the new guidelines, some are not.Courses are intended to be non-proprietary in nature. Courses that serve as a "marketing pitch" for a manufacturer will not be approved for NYS CE credit. For example, a manufacturer's Power Point presentation may only include their company name/logo on the first and last slide of a presentation.
